New York City’s Commercial Recycling Rate Far Below Leading US Cities

Despite new commercial recycling rules intended to make recycling easier and more transparent for New York City businesses, the commercial sanitation industry failed to meaningfully increase recycling in 2016. New York’s commercial recycling rate remains a disappointingly low 22%. The low rate along with photographic evidence suggests that some private waste haulers and processors are illegally landfilling materials intended for recycling.


Comptroller and Public Advocate Back Commercial Waste Reform Policy

Comptroller Scott Stringer and Public Advocate Letitia James announced their support today for the Department of Sanitation’s commercial waste zone policy, which will transform the way commercial waste is collected in New York City. Under the new policy, announced by
